Merchant Survey: How Do Amazon and eBay Fare?

According to a survey released by EcommerceBytes, the best marketplaces in the US are Amazon, Bonanza, Craigslist, eBay, Etsy and Ruby Lane.

Over 10,000 of the publication’s readers voted, evaluating each marketplace on four key areas: profitability, customer service, communication and ease of use.

The survey revealed that ecommerce retailers see eBay as the most profitable marketplace, followed by Amazon, Etsy, Ruby Lane, Craigslist and Bonanza.

Ruby Lane seems to have the best customer service department. Bonanza ranked second in this category, followed by Amazon, Etsy and eBay. Craigslist scored the lowest in this category.

Etsy was chosen as the winner when it comes to ease of use. This is the fourth consecutive year it scored the highest in this category. Craigslist was ranked second and eBay third.

Apparently, Amazon and Bonanza still need to work on their systems as they were seen as less easy to use compared to their competitors.

As for how these platforms communicate with customers, retailers think that Bonanza knows how to play this game and are very satisfied with its approach. Ruby Lane seems to have a good communication strategy as well. The third position was given to Amazon, followed by eBay and Etsy.

Obviously, each marketplace has a specific clientele, lists certain types of products and attracts a certain type of shopper.

Nevertheless, this survey is very valuable for both sellers and marketplaces. Sellers know what to expect from various platforms if they are considering expanding their businesses on either of them while marketplaces get an insight view, directly from their customers, regarding the areas that need improvements and small adjustments in order to become more competitive and help their retailers to further develop.

At the end of the day, no matter which marketplace each merchant prefers, in order to succeed they need an innovative ecommerce solution that automates processes and provides valuable analytics into market trends and business performance.
